Laoling Three-in-one Cultural Center

Laoling Three-in-one Cultural Center

The project locates in the southern end of Laoling city center. The site has a west-east span of 180 meters, and a north-south span of 280 meters. On the west side of the site is the south Bohai Road, the east side is Fuqian Business area, the south side is Fuxin Road and the north side is Fukang Road.

This project comprises three sections of the archives, the museum plus the Senior activity center, and the library. The site is in the shape of an irregular rectangle which is longer from north to south than from west to east. The north side is connected with the land reserved for greening, which has a broad and open view. The surrounding area is close to major streets, and the transportation is very convenient. The emphasis of this design aims at the integration with the landscape environment, forming the transition from the urban space to green landscape. It targets for the creation of a multi-level, tri-dimensional space for cultural activities as well as leisure for Laoling citizens. People can enjoy the beautiful view on the top of the building and can rest and sit in the garden as well as have a pleasant walk in the corridor.

Design Concept:

1. According to the analysis of Laoling local culture and features, the design language of the Cultural Center is proposed as followed: it employs the origin of appreciation of the character '品' in Chinese, and integrates three parts into one configuration by following the layout of the character '品', leading to an integration of individualized functionality but consistent structure; the dominant color tune of the building is jujube red, which indicates Laoling local special product jujube.

2. It is constructed as a low energy-consumption house which combines natural ventilation, natural lighting, solar radiation and indoor non-heating thermal resources and other passive energy-saving measures, and highly-efficient energy-saving architectural enclosure structure techniques.

3. The landscape is fused into the architecture, and it is integrated with the surrounding environment by the garden, roof greening, united and consistent, complementarily dynamic and static, natural and harmony.

The museum is the most significant carrier reflecting city history and culture, it is therefore set up in the middle, and the façade is composed of glass, to highlight its significant position; the archives exhibits a calm and magnificent cultural connotation, therefore the façade is designed to be wall structure; the library represents features of openness, and it is installed with many French windows on the façade.

The archives, the museum and the library are arranged in order from north to south, and through the staggered layout of the building block, the mutual occlusion is reduced, and the solar heat reception rate is increased. The elevation design of each building implies different internal functions and fulfills the corresponding lighting conditions as well as the passive building regulations. The southern façade of the library is designed to set up with large area of French windows, not only meeted library's requirement for lighting, but also lowed the energy consumption; because the archive is less demanding for lighting, the façade is set up most in the north side.

All buildings are expected to meet the passive building standard, and to achieve passive heating and cooling by the utilization of building heat budget.
