As the former landfill in Freiburg, Eichelbuck was a 55m-high”garbage hill”when it was stopped using in 2005. Thanks for waste ecological economic policy in Freiburg, nowadays garbage hill has been converted into an energy hill. It was installed Freiburg’s largest solar photovoltsic services along the slope of the hill, with total area 17,000 m2 , equivalent to the size of two and half football fields, and the output power is 2.5 MW, able to cover 1000 households’electricity demand.
According to the further planning, Eichelbuck will become an outdoor natural spot for citizens in Freiburg, also show the public the changes of morden waste economy and waste disposal technologies. A new exhibition hall was established at the top of “energy hill” open to all visitors as a public space. The main activity room in the exhibition hall faces south, through large glass the whole solar power plant appears in front of visitors. The northen building body along the surrounding mountains, the roof is covered with green plant, greatly reduced heat radiation in northen building as well as the top of the building, signifigently improved thermal insulation of building envelope and integrated the building with surrondings.
